Hazard Assessment

International Research Collaborations for the Hazard Assessment

Nanocyl supports research that is building the industry’s knowledge base about the possible adverse effects linked to the production and use of carbon nanotubes.

Although raw carbon nanotubes have not shown severe adverse effects on health, safety or the environment, Nanocyl is participating in several research projects about minimizing the exposure to risks.

These research projects are ongoing, but current results show no reported toxicity after skin exposure: no penetration, no sensitization. However, the studies do recommend using proper handling procedures to avoid inhalations.

Detailed reports on in vivo, in vitro and OECD tests can be obtained on request.

Currently, Nanocyl is involved in several HSE projects with international partners:

Studies about the potential for genotoxicity and carcinogenix effect is under evaluation by the Joined Research Center for Human Health of Ispra in Italy

Nanocyl is member of the European Association of Carbon Nanotubes Producers (Cefic)

Even if there is no reported toxicity after ingestion of Carbon Nanotubes, a full toxicological evaluation will be performed continuously over the next 4 years in cooperation with universities (FUNDP)

Nanotoxico will identify potential implications of manufactured nanomaterials on human health, and will develop in vitro technologies for nanotoxicity evaluation. It will also help regulatory authorities to formulate a risk assessment methodology applicable to engineered nanomaterials for their safe production and applications (Nanotoxico)
