REACH: Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals.
REACH started on 1st June 2007 to streamline and improve the former legislative framework on chemicals of the European Union (EU).
Its aims are to:
·Improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals
·Enhance the competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry
·Promote alternative methods for the assessment of hazards of substances
·Ensure the free circulation of substances on the internal market of the European Union
PMN: Pre-Manufacturing Notice
In the US, under TSCA (Toxic Substance Control Act), each new chemical must be registered with the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) before it can be made or sold for commercial use. That registration requires the submission of environmental, health and safety (EHS) information to enable review and approval. Any substance that is not on the TSCA Inventory is classified as a new chemical. Prior to manufacture or import of a new chemical for general commercial use, a notice (Pre-Manufacturing Notice) must be filed with EPA under Section 5 of TSCA.
